The Ahmedabad RTO was formed under section 213 (1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, allied acts and rules framed thereunder. The department also entrusted in policy-making, coordination, implementation, monitoring and regulatory functions of all the Transport related aspects of Gujarat.

Functions of RTO Offices in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad RTO provides organised and systematic transport facility across the city while the fundamental mission is to implement various transport provisions under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Mentioned below are the functions of RTO Ahmedabad:

  • Issuance of licences, international driving licence, conductor licence, and related services
  • Registration of different vehicle models including personal and commercial, permits, NOC issuance, among others
  • Revenue collection for the government
  • Inspection of vehicles at check posts
  • Environmental up-gradation through CNG/LPG conversion and PUC testings
  • Enforcing Road safety regulations

Types of Driving Licence issued in RTO Ahmedabad

The broad vehicle categorisation for the issue of licence are as follows:

  • Motorcycle with an engine capacity of up-to 50cc (MCWoG): This is the only licence that is issued to applicants of 16 years or above of age. They must have the consent of their guardian or parents along with the required documents
  • Motorcycles with gear (MCWG): Issued to ride bikes of any engine capacity with gears. Applicant must be 18 years of age or above with valid required documents. 
  • Two-wheelers without gear (MCWOG): Issued for mopeds or two-wheelers without gear
  • LMVs: This licence is issued to the drivers of light motor vehicles like cars, autos, vans, jeeps, etc. This can be used for both commercial and personal purposes.
  • Heavy commercial vehicle: Applicant must be 8th standard qualified and over or equal to 18 years of age with driving training certificate from registered school under state government
  • Driving Licence for road rollers, trailers, dozers, cranes, among others
  • Transport Vehicle (TRV): Applicant must be 8th standard qualified and over or equal to 18 years of age with proper driving/ training certificate.

Types of Vehicle Registration in RTO Ahmedabad

RTO Ahmedabad offers two types of vehicle registration services. They are Temporary and permanent vehicle registration.

  • A Temporary Vehicle Registration is issued by the vehicle dealer at the sale of any new vehicle to a customer with a validity of 7 days. The maximum period for which the temporary registration number is valid is a month. 
  • Meanwhile, the purchased/delivered vehicle has to be registered within this period by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the concerned area of the owner to receive the Permanent Vehicle Registration.
